ABC Drops Moran Over Trump Post

ABC severs ties with journalist Terry Moran after his post attacking Trump and Stephen Miller violates network policy.

ABC News Ends Veteran Reporter’s Contract

ABC News has confirmed it is not renewing the contract of longtime correspondent Terry Moran after a social media post targeting President Donald Trump and senior White House aide Stephen Miller was found to breach company policy. The post, which was later deleted, drew widespread attention and backlash over the weekend.

“We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision to not renew,” a network spokesperson said. ABC emphasized its commitment to objectivity and professionalism, adding that its reporters are expected to maintain high standards in their public and professional communications.

Moran, who joined ABC News in 1997, was initially suspended after his post went viral. In it, he described Stephen Miller as “a world-class hater” and asserted that Miller’s political motivations stemmed more from malice than ideology. “It’s not brains. It’s bile,” Moran wrote. He accused Miller of feeding off hatred, stating, “He eats his hate.”

The correspondent extended his criticism to President Trump, writing that Trump’s own “hatred [is] only a means to an end,” aimed at self-glorification. Moran concluded that hatred is also Trump’s “spiritual nourishment.”

Backlash Follows Recent Trump Interview

The controversial post surfaced less than six weeks after Moran sat down with President Trump for a televised interview. During the exchange, Trump sharply rebuked Moran, suggesting the journalist lacked courtesy. “You’re doing the interview, I picked you because, frankly, I never heard of you, but that’s OK. I picked you, Terry, but you’re not being very nice,” Trump said at the time.

The post drew criticism from within and outside the network, eventually leading to Moran’s suspension as ABC leadership evaluated the situation. Although Moran deleted the comments, the damage had already resonated through both journalistic and political circles.

ABC’s decision not to renew his contract underscores a growing sensitivity among news organizations to public statements made by their journalists on social media, particularly those seen as partisan or inflammatory. The network reiterated that it aims to deliver “straightforward, trusted journalism” and expects its employees to reflect those values publicly.

As the media landscape continues to grapple with the boundaries of personal expression and institutional credibility, Moran’s departure highlights the consequences reporters face when private opinion intersects with public responsibility.
