Black Smoke Rises Again at Vatican Conclave

Black smoke emerged once again from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, signaling that the College of Cardinals has not reached a decision in its second vote to elect the new pope. The smoke appeared just before noon, disappointing the thousands of faithful who had gathered in St. Peter’s Square to await the news.

This development marks the second day of the papal conclave, with the cardinals continuing their secret deliberations under the iconic frescoes of Michelangelo. According to conclave rules, a two-thirds majority—at least 89 votes—is required to elect the next pope, and so far, consensus has remained elusive.

The electors are set to return to the Sistine Chapel this afternoon at 16:30 CET to continue voting. Two additional ballots are expected unless a pope is elected during the first session of the afternoon. Vatican observers note that it’s not unusual for several rounds of voting to take place before a new leader of the Catholic Church is chosen.

As the world watches, anticipation continues to build around who will emerge as the next spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide.
