China Criticizes UK-US Trade Pact

Beijing has strongly opposed the recently signed UK-US trade agreement, citing concerns over its potential to exclude Chinese goods from British supply chains. According to sources speaking to the Financial Times, China views the deal's stringent security conditions on the UK's steel and pharmaceutical sectors as detrimental to its trade interests.

China’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the 'basic principle' that international agreements should not harm third parties. 'Co-operation between states should not be conducted against or to the detriment of the interests of third parties,' a ministry source stated, underscoring Beijing’s displeasure with the bilateral pact.

A Chinese government adviser, speaking anonymously, warned that China 'will need to respond,' criticizing the UK for hastily agreeing to the deal. The adviser hinted at possible retaliatory measures, signaling Beijing's readiness to protect its global economic position.

The UK-US agreement aligns with the Trump administration’s broader strategy of forming bilateral trade deals, a move perceived by China as an attempt to marginalize Chinese industries on the global stage. The report reflects China's growing unease over being systematically excluded from key international supply chains through such agreements.

As tensions escalate, Beijing’s criticism highlights the delicate balance in global trade dynamics, where strategic partnerships among Western allies increasingly challenge China’s economic reach. The long-term impact of this deal on UK-China relations and global trade patterns remains to be seen.
