EU Pushes Trade Deal, Pledges €3B for Migration

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union is working "intensively" to finalize a trade agreement with the United States. Speaking alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, von der Leyen highlighted Europe’s global attractiveness and its eagerness to deepen ties with Washington. The EU has proposed a zero-for-zero tariff arrangement, aiming to eliminate tariffs on industrial goods as part of a comprehensive deal.

"We are ready to eliminate tariffs on industrial goods," von der Leyen stated, emphasizing that while the EU prefers partnership, it stands prepared to act if negotiations falter. The push for a trade agreement comes at a crucial time as both sides seek to reinforce economic cooperation.

In addition to trade, von der Leyen unveiled a significant new commitment: the EU will allocate an additional €3 billion to combat illegal immigration. The funds will be used to strengthen external borders and accelerate asylum and deportation procedures. Von der Leyen noted that illegal arrivals have already decreased by 30% this year, marking progress but also underscoring the need for sustained efforts. "Our citizens expect us to deliver," she affirmed.

Von der Leyen also mentioned that she had a “good conversation” with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding trade relations. However, she stressed that any visit to the White House would require a concrete proposal ready for discussion. “It has to be concrete, and I want to have a solution that we both can agree on,” she explained.

The developments reflect the EU’s dual focus on fortifying its borders and advancing its trade agenda, with von der Leyen balancing assertive diplomacy and internal policy commitments as key priorities for the bloc’s future.
