EU Warns of €95B Tariffs, Files WTO Case vs US

The European Commission on Thursday announced that it may impose counter-tariffs on €95 billion worth of United States imports if ongoing negotiations fail to resolve a transatlantic trade dispute. Brussels launched a public consultation on potential measures targeting a broad range of industrial and agricultural products, while also weighing restrictions on €4.4 billion worth of its own steel scrap and chemical exports to the US.

In parallel, the EU revealed plans to formally lodge a request for consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO), disputing what it describes as Washington’s “blatantly” illegal tariffs. The legal challenge will address both the so-called "reciprocal" universal tariffs and the levies imposed specifically on cars and car parts.

The European Commission emphasized that these steps are part of a dual strategy: pursuing a fair, negotiated settlement with the United States while preparing decisive countermeasures if talks collapse. “Our aim remains a mutually beneficial and balanced solution,” Brussels stated, but warned that it will act to uphold international trade law if necessary.

The potential tariffs reflect rising tensions between two of the world’s largest trading blocs, underscoring the EU’s determination to defend its economic interests and reaffirm the primacy of WTO rules amid increasing protectionist pressures.
