Freedom Caucus Demands Vote on $9.4B DOGE Cuts
Conservatives push for immediate House vote on $9.4B DOGE cuts targeting NPR, PBS, and USAID amid Musk's departure.
Freedom Caucus Presses for Immediate Action
The House Freedom Caucus is urging the House of Representatives to swiftly vote on President Donald Trump's proposed $9.4 billion rescissions package. The package, expected to be sent to Congress this week, aims to reduce federal spending by targeting funding for National Public Radio (NPR), the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., emphasized the urgency, stating that the House should "immediately move this to the floor for swift passage." The caucus supports these cuts as part of a broader effort to eliminate what they consider wasteful government spending.
Elon Musk's Departure and DOGE's Future
This push comes as Elon Musk concludes his tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he spearheaded initiatives to streamline federal operations. Despite initial goals of saving $2 trillion, DOGE reports indicate approximately $175 billion in savings, though some figures are contested.
President Trump acknowledged Musk's contributions during a recent press conference, suggesting that Musk would continue to advise on efficiency efforts. Musk, however, has expressed a desire to refocus on his private ventures, including Tesla and SpaceX.
As the rescissions package moves to Congress, lawmakers have 45 days to act before the proposal expires. The outcome will signal the administration's commitment to fiscal reform and the influence of conservative factions within the Republican Party.
