Hamas Open to Gaza Ceasefire Talks After Trump Plan
Hamas has indicated readiness for a Gaza ceasefire as President Trump puts forward a 60-day truce proposal, raising hopes for progress in ongoing negotiations.
Hamas to Meet Mediators After Trump’s Ceasefire Initiative
Hamas confirmed on Wednesday that it is prepared to consider a ceasefire agreement with Israel, emphasizing its willingness to accept any initiative that results in a complete end to the ongoing war. This declaration follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 60-day ceasefire proposal, intended to create space for broader negotiations and humanitarian relief in Gaza.
A delegation from Hamas is scheduled to meet with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo to discuss the latest proposal. An Egyptian official stated that these talks will center on President Trump’s suggested framework, which aims to de-escalate the conflict and lay the groundwork for a potential long-term settlement. While Hamas acknowledged Trump’s efforts, it stopped short of formally endorsing the 60-day pause, reiterating its demand for a total cessation of hostilities and full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
The group’s position remains rooted in longstanding conditions: a full Israeli pullout from Gaza, an end to the conflict, and the release of remaining hostages. Hamas previously signaled willingness to free the approximately 50 hostages it still holds, though it notes that fewer than half are believed to be alive. The fate of these hostages remains a critical issue as the parties negotiate terms for a possible agreement.
Israeli Conditions and Trump’s Public Appeal
For its part, Israel has maintained that any agreement must include the surrender, disarmament, and exile of Hamas from Gaza. Israeli officials stated that the current proposal would provide for a 60-day truce, a partial Israeli withdrawal, and an increase in humanitarian aid to the territory. The plan also envisions the release of around 10 hostages, with further steps to be discussed in ongoing negotiations. However, Israel has not agreed to a full end to the war as part of the latest plan, insisting that certain conditions must be met before a permanent resolution can be achieved.
President Trump unveiled the ceasefire proposal on Tuesday via social media, expressing optimism about the prospects for peace. “My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War,” Trump posted. He further acknowledged the efforts of Qatar and Egypt, stating, “The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal. I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better – IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”
Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar echoed the seriousness of Israel’s intentions, stating that Israel remains committed to reaching a deal for the hostages and to securing a ceasefire in Gaza.
The current talks represent a critical juncture for both sides, as international mediators press for a solution that could halt the violence and address urgent humanitarian needs. The outcome of these negotiations will shape the future of the Gaza conflict, the safety of hostages, and the broader prospects for peace in the region. All eyes now turn to Cairo, where the coming days may determine whether a lasting agreement is within reach.
