Hinson Faces Jeers Over Trump Tax Plan
Rep. Ashley Hinson faced protests as she defended Trump’s tax bill and GOP reforms during Iowa town hall events.
Hinson Promotes Trump Agenda Amid Hostile Crowds
Representative Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, encountered vocal opposition from constituents during two back-to-back town halls in Elkader and Decorah on Wednesday, as she defended President Donald Trump’s tax and spending legislation. The events highlighted growing tensions over federal reforms and GOP priorities.
Speaking to the public, Hinson promoted the budget reconciliation bill and the Department of Government Efficiency’s initiatives. However, both drew sharp reactions from attendees, with many loudly booing and interrupting her remarks. “They were booing when I said, ‘We’re preserving tax cuts,’” Hinson later remarked. “I can't believe people would boo tax cuts for themselves.”
One emotional moment came when a woman named Linda stood to speak on behalf of Nicole, a wheelchair user who relies on federal health and food assistance. Nicole expressed fear that any program cuts would make her life more difficult. Hinson responded by assuring the crowd that Republicans aimed only to reform, not eliminate, such support, prompting cheers from attendees.
The positive energy dissipated when a man accused Republicans of prioritizing tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of education funding. Despite Hinson’s clarification that the bill did not alter income tax brackets, he shouted, “It’s an absolute crime,” prompting louder boos. Tensions escalated further when Hinson criticized universities for “letting men play in girls’ sports,” leading to cries of “stop it” from the audience.
Support for Trump Sparks More Outrage
At the second town hall, Hinson’s comments praising Trump provoked additional jeers. “The president is, I believe, fighting for you and fighting for me. I’m fighting alongside of him,” she stated. She went on to say, “I think God saved President Trump’s life in Butler [Pennsylvania] for a reason. I think he is helping us to save this country.”
Speaking after the events, Hinson maintained her composure and stood by her positions. “I did exactly what I said I was going to do,” she said. “I will not only defend this agenda and answer any questions any day, any time of the week, but I think it is really important that I’m out there on offense, correcting the record.”
She noted that one Vietnam War veteran approached her to express disappointment over the noise, saying he struggled to hear her message. “That’s really the disservice,” Hinson reflected. “People who want to have civil discourse and hear real answers lose out when others just want to disrupt.”
Despite the confrontations, Hinson reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the Trump administration’s policies and engaging with constituents directly—regardless of opposition. The town halls underscored the political divide and the intensity of public sentiment surrounding Trump-era economic reforms.
