Macron, Trump Call for Ukraine Ceasefire
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he spoke "several times" with United States President Donald Trump to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The conversations, which took place on Thursday night, focused on reinforcing efforts to establish a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.
"I welcome his strong call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire," Macron tweeted, highlighting Trump’s commitment to promoting peace in the region. Macron urged all parties to pursue this goal immediately, stressing the need to avoid delays, false pretenses, or stalling tactics.
Macron noted that Ukraine had already expressed its support for such a ceasefire nearly two months ago. "I now expect Russia to do the same," he added, underscoring the need for a reciprocal commitment to halt hostilities.
On May 7, Russia initiated a three-day ceasefire, a move seen as a tentative step toward de-escalation. However, Ukraine later accused Russia of breaching the truce, casting doubt on Moscow’s intentions and raising concerns over the viability of a lasting peace agreement.
The renewed diplomatic efforts between France and the United States signal a unified approach to resolving the Ukraine conflict. Observers believe that coordinated international pressure could be instrumental in achieving a sustained ceasefire and, ultimately, a broader resolution to the crisis.
