Rep. Don Bacon Mulls Run for Governor or President
Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon will not seek re-election, expressing interest in serving as governor, president, or Secretary of Defense.
Bacon Announces Plans to Leave Congress, Considers Executive Roles
Outgoing Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska has announced he will not seek another term in Congress, but remains open to further public service—potentially as governor, president, or even Secretary of Defense. The longtime lawmaker shared his intentions in a recent interview, reflecting on his career in the House and his aspirations for the future.
Bacon, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2017, emphasized that while he remains committed to serving the country, the demanding schedule and the nature of congressional work have prompted him to consider new opportunities. “This job requires a 14-hour day during the week, Saturdays, parades and a variety of things, and Sunday sometimes. And do I want to do this for two more years? I just didn’t have the hunger to want to work at that intensity level,” Bacon explained. He added that family played a significant role in his decision: “My wife has wanted me to come home. I’m gone to D.C. four days a week, and I have a chance to be home now seven days a week, and I have eight grandkids within 10 minutes of my house.”
Open to Executive Leadership—Governor or President
In remarks to NBC News, Bacon revealed he was recently asked whether his interest in executive roles meant he was eyeing a run for governor or even president. “I got asked the other day, ‘You say you’re interested in being an executive — is that governor or president?’ I go, ‘Yes,’” Bacon said. He clarified that he would not challenge Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, who began his term in 2023, but remains receptive to opportunities where he could make what he calls “a unique difference.”
Bacon also mentioned he would consider the role of Secretary of Defense “if God opens up that door,” though he admitted uncertainty about being tapped for such a position by a future GOP president. Regardless, his primary motivation, he stressed, is to continue serving the nation in a meaningful way outside of Congress.
Bacon responded with humor to skepticism about a presidential run, replying to a post on X that declined to support him with, “329,000,000,000 more to go!”
Looking Ahead to Life Beyond the House
As Bacon prepares to complete his term, he reiterated his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nebraska in Washington but underscored his readiness to prioritize family and seek a different pace. His announcement marks a significant transition, as he leaves open the prospect of returning to public service in a new capacity, aiming to contribute his experience and leadership to the state or the nation in the years ahead.
