'Squad' Criticizes Trump Over Iran Strikes

Progressive lawmakers accuse Trump of violating the Constitution with Iran strikes, call for urgent War Powers action.

Progressive Lawmakers Condemn President’s Military Move

Members of the congressional “Squad” unleashed a wave of criticism at President Donald Trump after his late Saturday order to launch a barrage of missile and bomb strikes against Iranian nuclear sites. Leading voices in the group denounced the action as both illegal and unconstitutional, renewing a heated debate over executive war powers.

Representative Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., was especially vocal, taking to social media to condemn what she called a blatant violation of the Constitution and warning against another “forever war.” Tlaib argued that Trump sent US troops to bomb Iran without congressional approval, accusing the administration of ignoring the will of the American people. She also accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of misleading the US, referencing past foreign policy controversies.

“President Trump sending US troops to bomb Iran without the consent of Congress is a blatant violation of the Constitution. The American people do not want another forever war,” Tlaib posted, echoing concerns that only Congress has the authority to declare war.

Calls for War Powers Resolution, Impeachment

Other Squad members amplified the call for congressional oversight. Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., asserted that Trump and Netanyahu were “warmongers” whose actions risked innocent lives. She insisted that only Congress has the power to declare war and called on lawmakers to “act to protect our safety and shared humanity.” Rep. Gregorio Casar, D-Texas, argued that Trump’s actions were illegal and demanded the immediate passage of a War Powers Resolution to block further escalation.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called Trump’s decision “disastrous,” and said that launching strikes on Iran without congressional authorization constituted “grounds for impeachment.” She warned that Trump’s actions could entangle America in generations-long conflict.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., echoed these views, stating that Trump’s actions recklessly escalated the conflict between Israel and Iran. She urged Congress to vote immediately on War Powers resolutions put forward by Rep. Thomas Massie and Senator Tim Kaine.

Outside the Squad, calls for impeachment were echoed by Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who condemned the strike as a grave violation of the Constitution. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Rep. Summer Lee both accused Trump of risking countless lives and acting outside his authority.

White House and GOP Defend Executive Authority

Not all lawmakers agreed with the Squad’s interpretation of presidential power. Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., countered that the courts have determined the War Powers Act refers to the deployment of troops, not the specific actions taken by Trump. “If we are attacked, the commander-in-chief has the authority and ability to protect Americans at home and abroad,” Mullin said, defending the administration’s right to respond to perceived threats.

As the debate intensifies, the calls for immediate congressional action, war powers oversight, and even impeachment highlight deep partisan divides over the scope of executive authority in matters of war. The coming days are likely to see further resolutions and fierce debate as lawmakers seek to assert their constitutional role in guiding US military action abroad.
