Trump Blocks Harvard Federal Research Funds
United States President Donald Trump’s administration announced that Harvard University will no longer be eligible for new federal research grants, escalating tensions between the White House and the elite academic institution. The move is part of a broader effort to pressure universities into adopting political and structural reforms.
According to CNN, U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon is expected to send a letter to Harvard President Alan Garber outlining the administration’s decision. The letter will state that Harvard’s eligibility will remain suspended until it demonstrates what the administration deems “responsible management of the university.”
Senior department officials cited what they called “serious failures” by Harvard in handling antisemitism, promoting academic rigor, supporting viewpoint diversity, and maintaining public trust. The administration accused the university of “ongoing discrimination” and an “abandonment of rigor and academic excellence.”
To become eligible again for federal funding, Harvard would have to engage in negotiations with the government and prove full compliance with all federal laws, the official added.
The administration has already frozen $2.2 billion in existing research allocations to Harvard, and the latest move is expected to impact an additional $1 billion annually. These funds are critical to the university’s research programs and scientific initiatives.
The decision marks one of the most significant confrontations between a U.S. administration and a major university in decades. It underscores President Trump’s broader campaign to hold elite institutions accountable for what his administration views as ideological bias and mismanagement.
As the situation develops, academic and political communities are closely watching how Harvard responds and whether further actions will follow for other institutions.
