Trump: Canada Wants New U.S. Deal

United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reached out to him the day before, expressing interest in negotiating a new agreement. According to Trump, Carney said, “Let’s make a deal,” during the phone call. Though no specifics were revealed, the comment points to potential efforts aimed at reestablishing or reshaping the bilateral relationship.

When asked during a Cabinet meeting about rebuilding ties with Canada, Trump responded with confidence. “I think we are gonna have a great relationship,” he said. Trump praised Carney’s tone, stating that the Canadian leader was “very nice” during their exchange and compared favorably to some “conservative factions.”

Trump also noted that Carney is expected to visit the White House “very shortly, within the next week or less.” The invitation signals a shift toward diplomatic engagement, potentially following recent tensions between the two nations.

The remarks came just after Carney made pointed comments suggesting a break in the historic U.S.-Canada alliance. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” Carney recently stated, implying that Canada has moved on from what he perceived as a damaged relationship due to prior U.S. actions.

Despite Carney’s critical tone in past statements, Trump’s response appears aimed at setting a more constructive tone for future diplomacy. The mutual willingness to engage suggests that both sides may be interested in redefining the terms of cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

As both leaders prepare for further discussions, attention will turn to whether any new trade or diplomatic framework can emerge to replace the now-questioned economic integration that previously defined U.S.-Canada relations.
