Trump Demands Special Prosecutor for 2020 Election Probe
Trump calls for special prosecutor, insists 2020 election was fraudulent and blasts Biden’s immigration record.
Trump Renews Demands for Election Investigation
President Donald Trump has renewed calls for a special prosecutor to be appointed to investigate the 2020 presidential election, a contest he maintains was rigged in favor of Joe Biden. In a pointed statement posted Friday on Truth Social, Trump repeated his assertion that the election was "stolen" and characterized the alleged evidence of wrongdoing as "massive and overwhelming."
Highlighting what he described as a stark contrast in immigration policy, Trump praised his administration for achieving zero border crossings in May, compared to what he claimed were 62,000 migrants released under the Biden administration during the same period last year. He called Biden’s handling of the border "grossly incompetent," linking it to broader grievances about the state of the nation and the electoral process.
Trump’s latest remarks follow years of repeated claims that a series of irregularities and unlawful actions led to his 2020 election loss. In the run-up to the January 6, 2021, certification of the Electoral College vote, Trump and his supporters pressed Vice President Mike Pence to send results back to state legislatures for further review, a request Pence rejected as beyond his constitutional authority. The certification process was overshadowed by a violent riot at the U.S. Capitol, after which Trump’s challenges shifted to the courts.
Legal Battles and Political Rhetoric
Dozens of lawsuits were filed by Trump and his allies challenging election results in several battleground states. Most were dismissed due to insufficient evidence or lack of standing, leaving Biden’s victory—306 electoral votes and more than 81 million ballots—uncontested in official results. Nevertheless, Trump has continued to promote his theory of widespread fraud, including claims of “ballot harvesting” and the use of “mules” to deposit ballots after deadlines had passed.
Trump has made these claims a central theme of his 2024 re-election campaign, urging his supporters to turn out in force and overcome what he describes as a “rigged” system. Using slogans like “too big to rig,” Trump has framed his efforts as part of a fight to restore fairness to American elections.
Despite Trump’s assertions, former Attorney General Bill Barr stated in 2020 that there was no evidence of fraud significant enough to change the outcome. The Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity division also described the 2020 vote as “the most secure in American history.” Nevertheless, Trump’s demand for a special prosecutor has only intensified as he continues to contest the legitimacy of the election and Biden’s presidency.
“This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America!” Trump wrote, vowing to pursue accountability and reform. He condemned what he described as the damage inflicted by Biden and his “corrupt cronies,” rallying supporters under the banner of “Make America Great Again.”
As the 2024 campaign advances, Trump’s calls for investigation and claims about the 2020 election remain a polarizing issue, fueling debate about electoral integrity, political accountability, and the future of American democracy.
