Trump Endorses GOP Lawmakers for 2026
President Trump endorsed several House Republicans Sunday, including Garbarino, who missed a key vote due to oversleeping.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to formally endorse several Republican members of the House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The posts, shared individually for each candidate, included support for Reps. Andrew Garbarino of New York, Troy Downing of Montana, Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, and Bryan Steil of Wisconsin.
These endorsements arrive as Republicans seek to maintain their majority in the House through the second half of Trump's second presidential term. Each endorsement carried Trump’s declaration of full support, with particular attention placed on lawmakers' alignment with his legislative agenda.
Garbarino’s Missed Vote and Continued Support
Trump’s backing of Representative Andrew Garbarino comes just days after the New York congressman missed the House vote on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a key piece of legislation that recently passed the chamber. House Speaker Mike Johnson explained that Garbarino failed to make the vote in time, reportedly because he had fallen asleep.
In a public statement, Garbarino addressed the incident, saying, “I was moments away from the House floor, to vote 'yes,' when the vote was closed.” He emphasized his role in shaping the bill, noting that he had been “the leading voice on Long Island” during negotiations. He highlighted efforts to lift the cap on State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions as part of the bill’s provisions, calling it a win for Long Island families.
“While I am frustrated that the vote was closed before I was able to cast my vote, I am proud of the work we accomplished to deliver huge results for Long Island,” Garbarino added. “I congratulate President Trump on getting this bill passed and look forward to voting 'yes' when it comes back to the House floor from the Senate.”
In a follow-up message posted to X (formerly Twitter), Garbarino expressed gratitude for the president’s endorsement, stating, “Thank you, Mr. President, it’s an honor to serve NY-02.”
Midterm Stakes and GOP Momentum
The 2026 midterm elections are expected to be pivotal for the GOP, as the party works to preserve or expand its control over the House. Trump's endorsements are viewed as strategic efforts to solidify party loyalty and energize Republican voters nationwide.
Each endorsed representative is expected to play a role in advancing Trump’s policy initiatives in the latter part of his second term. The endorsements serve as both a reward for past loyalty and a signal to constituents about where Trump’s support lies as legislative priorities move forward.
While some observers noted the irony of endorsing a lawmaker who missed a key vote, Trump’s public embrace of Garbarino suggests confidence in his broader legislative alignment and political utility. The White House has not commented further on the endorsements.
As the midterm campaign season begins to take shape, Trump's Sunday postings reinforce his continued influence over the party and the importance of maintaining House control to advance his agenda in Congress.
