Trump Forms FEMA Review Council

Trump Forms FEMA Review Council

President Donald Trump announced Monday the formation of a FEMA Review Council and named several high-profile officials to lead the agency’s restructuring. Among those appointed are US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, marking a strategic shift in federal emergency management oversight.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “It is my Great Honor to appoint to the Council, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Governor Greg Abbott, Governor Glenn Youngkin, former Governor Phil Bryant, Michael Whatley, Mayor Jane Castor, Kevin Guthrie, W. Nim Kidd, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, Mark Cooper, Bob Fenton, and Evan Greenberg.”

The newly formed council is tasked with evaluating and reforming the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which Trump has described as “a disaster.” He previously stated in February that the agency should be terminated, signaling deep dissatisfaction with its performance.

Trump emphasized that the goal of the council is to repair what he called a “terribly broken System” and to shift power back to state-level emergency managers. “The new Members will work hard to fix a terribly broken System, and return power to State Emergency Managers, who will help, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN,” he stated.

The council includes a mix of federal officials, state governors, local leaders, and emergency management professionals. Their collective mandate is to assess FEMA’s current operational structure and recommend comprehensive reforms to improve disaster response efficiency and coordination nationwide.

This move marks a notable restructuring initiative under Trump’s administration, aligning with broader efforts to decentralize authority and empower local leadership in federal disaster planning and response strategies.
