President Donald Trump stated on Friday that a ceasefire in Gaza could be achieved “within the next week,” expressing optimism during remarks to reporters in the Oval Office. Calling the situation in Gaza “terrible,” Trump said he had spoken directly with key figures involved in negotiations and believed that an end to hostilities between Israel and Hamas was close.
“I think it’s close. I just spoke with some of the people involved,” Trump said, predicting, “We think within the next week we’re going to get a ceasefire.” The president emphasized his hope that the ceasefire would bring relief to the war-torn region, where civilians have faced months of violence and uncertainty.
Trump also addressed the severe humanitarian crisis gripping Gaza, noting the vital role of American assistance. “We’re supplying, as you know, a lot of money and a lot of food to that area because we have to, I mean, you have to,” he explained. “In theory we’re not involved in it, but we’re involved because people are dying.”
The president called on other nations to share responsibility for relief efforts, pointing out the long lines of people waiting for basic necessities. “It’s too bad other countries aren’t helping out,” Trump said. “Nobody’s helping out where we’re doing that because I think we have to on a humanitarian basis.” He described how food and aid sometimes fail to reach those in need, with some supplies intercepted and sold by others, but affirmed that improvements have been made to the system to ensure aid reaches civilians.
“We’re working on Gaza, trying to get it taken care of and again, you know, a lot of food has been sent there. And other countries throughout the world should be helping also,” Trump reiterated. He urged the international community to act, saying that U.S. efforts alone are not enough to address the scale of suffering in Gaza.
The announcement came days after Trump authorized U.S. military strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, later declaring a ceasefire between Israel and Iran and ending what he described as “the Twelve Day War.” In addition to discussing Gaza, Trump indicated that he “may” approve the transfer of Patriot missiles to Ukraine to bolster air defenses, signaling continued U.S. engagement in global security and humanitarian issues.
