Trump, Netanyahu Clash on Iran and Gaza

Strains between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are intensifying over sharply differing approaches to Iran’s nuclear program and the Gaza conflict.

Once known for their close alignment, the two leaders are now divided. Netanyahu is advocating for military strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, while President Trump is prioritizing diplomatic negotiations that could allow Tehran to maintain limited civilian uranium enrichment. This has triggered concerns within Israel's leadership, who fear a potential U.S.-Iran deal may fall short of neutralizing what they perceive as a critical security threat.

The rift widened as President Trump suspended U.S. military operations targeting Iranian-backed Houthi militants, and expressed public support for a Gaza ceasefire. His proposal includes a long-term plan for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, a stance that starkly contrasts with Israel’s ongoing military campaign in the territory.

Further highlighting the divergence, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff reportedly told the families of hostages held by Hamas that the United States is in favor of a ceasefire agreement and prioritizes the return of hostages. Witkoff noted that Israel is not yet ready to end its military offensive, though he emphasized a “window of opportunity” remains open through ongoing mediation efforts.

These developments come as President Trump prepares for an official Middle East visit, intensifying diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional conflicts. The widening gap in U.S.-Israel strategy marks a significant shift in one of Washington’s closest foreign alliances.
