Trump-Netanyahu Rift Denied
United States Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff firmly rejected reports suggesting a rift between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with Breitbart, Witkoff labeled the allegations as “preposterous,” stating, “I've been at multiple meetings with the president and the Prime Minister—they’re friendly. They're good friends in fact. Israel is a great partner for the United States, strategically, economically, we think very much alike, we have very similar objectives.”
Witkoff’s comments come amid escalating discussions about Israel’s Gaza campaign and the ongoing hostage crisis. Reports had previously claimed Witkoff criticized Israel’s stance on Gaza and the handling of hostage negotiations, prompting his clarification.
In parallel, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated that Israel has not agreed to any ceasefire or prisoner release with Hamas. In a statement, Netanyahu said, “Israel has not committed to a ceasefire of any kind or the release of terrorists,” clarifying that only a humanitarian corridor was authorized to facilitate the potential release of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander.
Hamas has signaled readiness to release Alexander as a goodwill gesture towards President Trump, amid negotiations involving the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar. Netanyahu emphasized that negotiations will continue “under fire,” with preparations underway to intensify military operations in Gaza.
Amid these developments, Witkoff arrived in Israel on Monday for meetings with Netanyahu and other senior officials. His visit coincides with heightened diplomatic coordination surrounding the potential handover of Edan Alexander. Additionally, U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler is also scheduled to visit, accompanied by Alexander's family.
The Trump administration maintains that its relationship with Israel remains strong, despite differing approaches to the Gaza conflict. As diplomatic efforts persist, both Washington and Jerusalem are navigating complex regional dynamics while working towards securing the release of hostages and addressing security concerns.
