Trump Orders Defunding of NPR, PBS
United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at halting all federal funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR). The decision, announced by the White House, reflects the administration’s stance that both organizations promote partisan content at taxpayer expense.
According to an official White House fact sheet, the administration believes that “NPR and PBS have fueled partisanship and left-wing propaganda with taxpayer dollars, which is highly inappropriate and an improper use of taxpayers' money, as President Trump has stated.”
The order specifically instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and other relevant federal agencies to cease distributing federal funds to both PBS and NPR. The CPB has historically served as a key funding conduit for public broadcasting services across the country.
This executive action marks a significant policy shift and escalates a longstanding conservative critique of publicly funded media outlets. While supporters of the order argue it ensures public funds are not used to support politically biased content, critics are likely to view the move as a blow to independent journalism and educational programming.
PBS and NPR have not yet issued public responses to the executive order. Both organizations have previously defended their editorial independence and emphasized their role in providing educational and cultural content to Americans across political lines.
Trump’s move underscores the administration’s broader approach to media and government spending, with an emphasis on accountability and ideological neutrality in the use of taxpayer dollars.
