Trump Plans 100% Tariff on Foreign Films

Trump Plans 100% Tariff on Foreign Films

United States President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the U.S., citing national and economic security threats posed by the increasing relocation of American film production overseas. Speaking on Monday, Trump called the foreign push to attract U.S. filmmakers a "concerted effort" that jeopardizes America's creative and industrial base.

"We're going to get it back," Trump said, referencing the decline in domestic film production and jobs. "I don't want to hurt the industry; I want to help the industry. It's a big industry, but it's an industry that's left, that's abandoned the U.S., where it started." He pointed to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s policies as contributing to the problem, labeling them incompetent and harmful to the film sector.

The president also confirmed that he would meet with industry executives to ensure alignment and support, emphasizing that the plan is intended to boost U.S. job creation in entertainment. "I want to make sure they're happy with it, because we're all about jobs," he added.

White House spokesman Kush Desai later clarified that "no final decisions" have been made regarding the proposed film tariffs, stating that the administration is "exploring all options to deliver on President Trump's directive to safeguard our country's national and economic security while Making Hollywood Great Again."

The proposal follows Trump’s earlier appointment of actors Mel Gibson, Jon Voight, and Sylvester Stallone as special Hollywood ambassadors, a move meant to reinvigorate the domestic entertainment industry by bringing more film production back to the U.S.

While the industry awaits further details, the initiative underscores Trump's broader economic platform focused on reshoring industries and strengthening U.S. cultural influence. Final decisions on the tariff are pending, with consultations planned to balance national interest with industry stability.
