Trump Says Powell Will Stay as Fed Chair
President Donald Trump has reiterated that he has no intention of removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell from his position. Speaking during an interview at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump addressed the matter with NBC’s Kristen Welker, affirming Powell would continue to serve his term, which extends through 2026.
“No. Why would I do that? I get to replace the person in a short period of time,” Trump stated, signaling that he sees no need for early dismissal given the upcoming opportunity to appoint a successor.
During the same interview, Trump was asked about concerns voiced by small businesses regarding the economic impact of tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. While some have called for relief measures, Trump dismissed these concerns, asserting that the tariffs are ultimately advantageous for domestic businesses.
“Many businesses are being helped,” he said. “They’re not going to need it. They’re going to make so much money.” His remarks reflect continued confidence in his administration’s trade strategy, which has included reciprocal tariffs aimed at countering perceived imbalances in international commerce.
The comments underscore Trump’s economic policy outlook as he continues his second term, blending assertive trade measures with anticipation of leadership transitions in key financial institutions like the Federal Reserve. While market reactions to such policies remain mixed, the administration maintains a consistent message of long-term economic gain for American industries and workers.
