Trump’s Syria Sanctions Comments Backed by Damascus

The Syrian government has expressed support for recent remarks made by United States President Donald Trump regarding the potential lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria during the era of former President Bashar al-Assad. In a statement released on Monday, the Syrian Foreign Affairs Ministry described Trump’s comments as a promising development that could help alleviate the suffering of the Syrian population.

"The Syrian people aspire to a full lifting of these sanctions, as part of broader measures that support peace and prosperity in both Syria and the region," the ministry stated. It emphasized that while the sanctions initially targeted the Assad regime and contributed to its decline, they now hinder Syria’s post-conflict recovery and have adverse effects on ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to address several pressing global issues. According to Turkish diplomatic sources cited by Anadolu Agency, the two officials discussed the situation in Gaza, including the release of U.S.-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, as well as upcoming peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which Turkey will host on May 15 in Istanbul.

Foreign Minister Fidan reportedly emphasized the need to lift U.S. sanctions on Syria as part of regional stabilization efforts. The conversation also covered Rubio’s planned visit to Turkey for an informal NATO foreign ministers' meeting, set to take place in Antalya from May 14 to 15. The visit underscores the strengthening cooperation between Turkey and the United States on matters of international diplomacy and security.

The convergence of diplomatic efforts by the U.S., Turkey, and Syria signals a potential shift in regional dynamics, with increased dialogue aimed at resolving long-standing conflicts and easing humanitarian pressures.
