Tuberville Enters Alabama Governor’s Race

Senator Tommy Tuberville enters Alabama's 2026 gubernatorial race, promising economic expansion and stronger education.

Tuberville Announces Run to Succeed Gov. Kay Ivey

Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville officially launched his campaign for Alabama governor on Tuesday, setting the stage for a high-profile race in the deep-red state. Tuberville’s announcement confirms weeks of speculation about his intention to run as term-limited Governor Kay Ivey prepares to leave office in 2026.

In a public appearance surrounded by family and supporters at a barbecue restaurant in Auburn, Tuberville emphasized his ties to Alabama and his desire to lead the state forward. “I’m doing this to help this country and the great state of Alabama,” he said. “I’m a football coach. I’m a leader. I’m a builder. I’m a recruiter, and we’re going to grow Alabama.”

Tuberville outlined his vision for the state, pledging to bring new manufacturing jobs, curb illegal immigration, and reform the education system. “We’re going to make education better again, and we’re going to do everything possible to make sure our kids stay in this state and work,” he added.

Strong Support and Trump Backing

A trusted ally of President Donald Trump, Tuberville confirmed that he has the president’s full support for his gubernatorial bid. He is also backed by Club for Growth, a well-funded conservative group known for its influence in Republican primaries.

The former Auburn University football coach entered politics in 2020, defeating former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the Republican Senate primary and unseating Democratic Senator Doug Jones. Tuberville has remained a staunch supporter of Trump’s policies throughout his time in Washington.

His decision to run for governor now opens up his Senate seat, adding another high-stakes race to the 2026 midterm election cycle. Tuberville’s prominence and popularity in the state make him a frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

Notably, Alabama Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth, once expected to be a key contender, announced last week that he will not run for governor, further clearing the path for Tuberville’s campaign.

Tuberville’s early entry and high-profile endorsements are expected to give him a strategic advantage in the months leading to the Republican primary. With a message rooted in conservative values and local pride, he has positioned himself as the candidate to beat in Alabama’s upcoming gubernatorial race.
