US Greenlights Patriot Sale to Romania
The United States Department of State has approved a potential $280 million sale of a Patriot Air Defense System to Romania, according to a statement released by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Monday. The notification was also formally sent to Congress the same day.
As part of the proposed agreement, Romania has requested one radar set, one engagement control station, two launching stations, a power plant, and a range of support equipment. The package further includes modification kits, communications hardware, classified software, spare parts, and training programs necessary for full integration and ongoing maintenance of the system.
“The proposed sale will improve Romania’s capability to meet current and future threats by enabling it to field a credible force to deter adversaries and support its participation in NATO operations,” the agency stated. Officials also noted that Romania will have no difficulty absorbing the new system into its existing military infrastructure.
The primary contractors for the deal will be RTX Corporation, based in Andover, Massachusetts, and Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Both companies are longstanding partners in the development and deployment of the Patriot missile defense system.
The sale reflects a continued effort by the United States to strengthen the defense capabilities of NATO allies, particularly those situated near sensitive geopolitical areas. With the integration of this advanced system, Romania is expected to enhance both its national security and its role within the alliance.
