U.S. Warns Travelers on Italy Terror Threat

The State Department urges increased caution in Italy, citing terrorism threats in public areas and tourist sites.

Travelers Urged to Stay Alert in Italy

As summer travel season begins, the U.S. Department of State has renewed its level 2 travel advisory for Italy, warning American tourists to exercise increased caution due to potential terrorism threats.

The advisory, updated on May 23, highlights ongoing risks of terrorist violence across Italy. The department cautioned that attacks may occur with little or no warning, particularly in high-traffic areas like tourist attractions, transportation hubs, markets, government offices, hotels, and religious sites.

According to the advisory, travelers should remain vigilant in public spaces, avoid crowded areas when possible, and regularly monitor local media for updates. It also advises Americans to prepare contingency plans in case of emergencies and to remain flexible with travel itineraries.

The State Department specifically recommends enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides U.S. citizens with up-to-date safety alerts from U.S. embassies abroad and facilitates contact during emergencies.

“There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Italy,” the official advisory stated. “Be prepared to adjust your plans and prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.”

While the warning reinforces existing concerns, Italy has maintained a level 2 travel advisory since April 2022. The advisory is part of a broader global review of travel risks, which includes regular updates based on safety developments and intelligence assessments. In May alone, the department issued travel advisories for 21 countries, ranging from level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) to level 4 (Do Not Travel).

Other major European destinations, including France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, are also currently under level 2 advisories. The State Department reviews advisories at least annually for levels 1 and 2, and biannually for higher-risk destinations.

“We take seriously our commitment to provide U.S. citizens with clear, timely, and reliable information about every country in the world so they can make informed travel decisions,” a department spokesperson stated.

Italy remains one of the most visited destinations in Europe, prized for its rich history, architecture, and 54 UNESCO World Heritage Sites—the highest number of any country. Despite its cultural appeal, the country’s volatile political climate and ongoing security concerns contribute to the advisory’s renewal.

Travelers to Italy are advised to remain cautious, stay informed, and prepare for evolving conditions while abroad.
