USTR: No China Trade Talks Yet
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that no official trade negotiations have taken place with China. He emphasized that the goal is to establish fair trade practices while strengthening the domestic economy.
“We want to make sure we have fair trade with China,” Greer said. When asked about the status of talks, he clarified: “No, not yet.”
He explained that the current strategy is not intended to isolate China but to rebuild the U.S. economy. “This is not a plan just to encircle China,” he said. “It’s a plan to fix the American economy—to have a greater share of manufacturing, to have real wages go up, to be producing things instead of having an economy that’s financed by the government.”
Greer added that addressing harmful foreign trade practices—including those from China—is a crucial part of this approach. He also indicated that initial tariff agreements with other U.S. trading partners are expected to be concluded “within weeks, not months.”
The statement reflects the administration’s emphasis on trade reform, domestic production, and reducing dependence on foreign markets as part of its broader economic recovery strategy.
