Pope Leo XIV Holds Private Audience with U.S. Leaders

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, held a private meeting Monday at the Vatican with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their wives, Usha Vance and Jeanette Rubio, were also present for the historic audience, which followed their attendance at the pope's inaugural mass the previous day.

The meeting was confirmed by the Holy See Press Office and reported by Vatican News. According to official statements, the discussions centered on strengthening the already strong relationship between the United States and the Holy See, with a particular focus on religious freedom and international humanitarian concerns.

Following the papal audience, Vice President Vance held additional talks with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. The session took place at the Secretariat of State and was described as “cordial” by the Holy See Press Office.

Focus on Religious Freedom and Global Conflict

During their conversation, Vance and Archbishop Gallagher reaffirmed the ongoing collaboration between the Catholic Church and the U.S. government, particularly in areas related to religious freedom, international diplomacy, and ecclesial matters. Both sides emphasized the value of dialogue and shared principles in confronting global challenges.

The two also exchanged views on pressing international issues, particularly those involving armed conflict. The discussions underscored the importance of upholding humanitarian law and international norms, as well as encouraging peaceful, negotiated solutions between opposing parties in conflict zones.

“Finally, there was an exchange of views on some current international issues, calling for respect for humanitarian law and international law in areas of conflict and for a negotiated solution between the parties involved,” the Holy See Press Office noted.

The audience reflects a broader continuity in Vatican-U.S. relations, marked by high-level dialogue on matters where faith, diplomacy, and humanitarian goals intersect. Pope Leo XIV’s American heritage and expressed commitment to global engagement have added a new dynamic to these diplomatic exchanges.

As global tensions mount in various regions, the Vatican continues to act as a moral and diplomatic voice for peace and dialogue. Monday’s private meeting reaffirmed the alignment of values between the Church and the current U.S. administration on issues of religious liberty and the humanitarian costs of war.
