Vance: Russia Too Demanding, Iran OK for Civilian Nuclear

US Vice President JD Vance expressed skepticism about resolving the Ukraine conflict without direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, stating that Moscow's demands are "too much" to bridge the current diplomatic divide. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference during the Russia-Ukraine Peace Strategy discussion, Vance emphasized that while the US hopes for an agreement on negotiation guidelines, significant hurdles remain before any peace resolution is achievable.

Vance’s remarks underline growing frustration with the slow pace of diplomacy and reflect concerns about escalating tensions in Eastern Europe. He urged both parties to engage directly to seek common ground, though he acknowledged the existing gap remains wide and complex.

On the topic of Iran, Vance clarified the US position, noting that while Iran is permitted to maintain a civilian nuclear program, it must not pursue nuclear weapons capabilities. He stated that current diplomatic engagements with Iran have been "good" and hinted that a successful deal could help reintegrate Iran into the global economy. The vice president stressed that clear boundaries must be maintained to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East.

Vance also commented on economic relations between China, Europe, and the US, emphasizing that the American economy can no longer bear the full burden of global overproduction, especially with China dominating manufacturing. He encouraged European markets to open more fully to US products and highlighted the importance of adapting transatlantic ties to current global challenges.

Reaffirming the strength of the US-Europe alliance, Vance concluded by calling for a more balanced partnership, where European nations take on increased defense responsibilities while working closely with the United States to maintain global stability and security.
