AOC Renews Call to Abolish ICE
Ocasio-Cortez reignites debate with call to dismantle ICE, sparking fierce Republican condemnation.
Progressive Agenda Sparks National Clash
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has once again thrust immigration enforcement into the spotlight by calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The appeal, issued in a recent campaign fundraising email, described ICE as a “rogue agency” that should not exist.
Formed in 2003 during the post-9/11 era, ICE has been a frequent target of progressive lawmakers. Ocasio-Cortez, who rose to prominence on a platform that included the “abolish ICE” demand in her 2018 campaign, emphasized her continued opposition amid President Donald Trump’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration during his second term.
“Why are you considered to be extreme?” she asked supporters, defending her stance as part of a broader platform that includes Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and small-dollar campaign funding. Ocasio-Cortez cited recent ICE actions and public fears surrounding civil liberties in support of her position.
Her statements ignited backlash from Republican officials. The National Republican Congressional Committee accused her of aligning with a “radical agenda,” warning that her proposals jeopardize public safety. “At this rate, the Democrat platform in 2026 will be a fever dream of defunding the police, wide open borders, and far-left hellscapes,” a spokesperson said.
Sharp Rebuke From Homeland Security
The Department of Homeland Security echoed these concerns. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned what she called “demonization of ICE officers,” citing a reported 413% increase in assaults against agents. “While politicians like AOC fight to protect criminal illegal aliens, our ICE officers will continue putting their lives on the line to arrest murderers, kidnappers, and pedophiles,” McLaughlin stated.
The White House also responded, defending ICE’s role in removing dangerous individuals and maintaining national security. “Why does AOC want to stop that?” said spokesperson Abigail Jackson, referring to the agency’s ongoing operations.
Ocasio-Cortez also raised alarms during a speech on Senator Bernie Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, warning that immigrants and LGBTQ individuals are facing targeted harassment and disappearances. She characterized the political moment as “terrifying,” urging Americans to recognize and resist ongoing injustices.
Reports have also surfaced regarding a possible Department of Justice investigation into a webinar hosted by Ocasio-Cortez in February, in which she allegedly advised constituents on how to impede ICE operations. Additionally, she remains in an ongoing public dispute with Trump’s border enforcement chief, Tom Homan.
Trump’s Second-Term Enforcement Drive
The Trump administration has emphasized robust immigration enforcement since returning to power. In the first 100 days of Trump’s second term, ICE arrested over 66,000 illegal immigrants and deported nearly 66,000. According to ICE, about 75% of those arrested were accused of criminal offenses.
Immigration remains a top issue for voters. In 2024, voter analysis showed that 52% of Americans believed Trump was best equipped to manage immigration, compared to 36% for Vice President Kamala Harris.
While Ocasio-Cortez continues to drive national conversation around progressive reform, the political risks of her messaging are evident, particularly as speculation builds around a possible 2028 presidential run. Neither her office, nor other leading Democrats, have publicly responded to the latest wave of criticism.
