Biden Cancer Diagnosis Draws Bipartisan Support

Leaders across political lines rally around Biden after diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer with bone metastasis.

Outpouring of Support Follows Biden’s Diagnosis

President Joe Biden revealed Monday that he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. His announcement has drawn swift and widespread expressions of support from across the political spectrum.

Biden’s team confirmed that the 82-year-old was seen last week for a new prostate nodule following increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, classified by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), with metastasis to the bone. The statement emphasized that the cancer is hormone-sensitive and thus manageable through treatment.

“Cancer touches us all,” Biden wrote in his first public statement since the diagnosis. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”

Support for the former president came quickly from both allies and rivals. President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.” Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., echoed the sentiment, writing, “Politics aside, we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Former President Barack Obama, under whom Biden served as vice president, also extended his support. “Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe,” Obama stated. “I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace.”

Former President Bill Clinton noted, “My friend Joe Biden’s always been a fighter,” while Hillary Clinton added, “I’m thinking of the Bidens as they take on cancer, a disease they’ve done so much to try to spare other families from.”

Vice President Kamala Harris posted, “Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life.”

Personal Reflections and Political Unity

Messages of compassion were also shared by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and former presidential daughter Meghan McCain. “Cancer is the absolute worst,” McCain wrote, sharing her own family’s experience with the disease. “I don’t believe times like these are appropriate for politics.”

Biden has previously dealt with serious medical issues, including the removal of a cancerous skin lesion during his presidency and surviving two brain aneurysms in the 1980s. He has also been a prominent advocate for cancer research, spearheading the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative during the Obama administration and renewing its goals while in office, aiming to halve cancer deaths in the U.S. within 25 years.

His diagnosis brings renewed attention to the national fight against cancer, the second leading cause of death in the United States. As Biden reviews treatment options with his medical team, the wave of support highlights a moment of unity around a deeply personal and human struggle.
