DOJ Braces for Anti-Trump Protests

DOJ alerts prosecutors to expect possible federal charges amid planned anti-Trump protests and Flag Day events.

The Department of Justice has instructed U.S. Attorney Offices across the country to prepare for potential criminal investigations ahead of a wave of nationwide anti-Trump demonstrations scheduled for Saturday. The directive comes amid concerns that otherwise peaceful protests could devolve into unlawful activity.

The demonstrations, organized under the name “No Kings,” are set to take place in cities and towns nationwide, with organizers declaring a collective rejection of what they describe as authoritarianism. “From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like,” the group’s website states.

A DOJ spokesperson emphasized that the department continues to uphold the right to peaceful assembly, stating, “As we’ve said repeatedly, the Department respects the right to peacefully protest & assemble to engage on important issues.” However, the DOJ also made clear that it will not hesitate to respond to any unlawful violence or property destruction. “The Department and its 94 US Attorney Offices will not tolerate unlawful violence & destruction of property,” the spokesperson added.

Protests Coincide with Military Parade

The timing of the protests aligns with a large military parade in Washington, D.C., commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. While the event is publicly billed as a celebration of military service and coincides with Flag Day, protest organizers have alleged that the parade also serves to glorify President Donald Trump on his 79th birthday, calling it “a made-for-TV display of dominance.”

Although the No Kings coalition will not stage a formal demonstration in the nation’s capital, affiliated groups such as DC Joy Day will host an event at Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. The primary protest focus will remain in other locations, including Philadelphia, Virginia, and Maryland.

The DOJ’s preparedness measures come in the wake of recent violent riots in Los Angeles and New York City. Officials indicated that if similar incidents occur during the upcoming protests, federal charges may be filed swiftly. “We are prepared to respond accordingly,” the DOJ spokesperson said.

While thousands are expected to participate in peaceful demonstrations across the country, the DOJ’s advisory underscores the high level of federal scrutiny and concern as tensions rise between protest organizers and the Trump administration.

As the weekend approaches, the nation’s legal infrastructure braces for a high-stakes convergence of civil protest and national celebration—one that may test the balance between public expression and public safety.
