Johnson: Trump Megabill Will Fuel US Economic Growth

House Speaker Johnson says Trump’s tax and spending bill will boost jobs and pay, previewing two more major GOP bills.

Johnson Praises New Legislation, Outlines Republican Strategy

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Sunday described President Donald Trump’s recently signed tax and spending package as “jet fuel” for the U.S. economy. Speaking on national television after the ceremonial handoff of the gavel to Trump, Johnson lauded the “big, beautiful bill” as a historic leap forward for Republican priorities and for American workers and families.

Johnson outlined an ambitious three-part legislative plan, indicating that the newly signed bill is only the beginning. He revealed that two additional major pieces of legislation are expected to follow within the next year—a second reconciliation bill by fall and a third by the spring, before the end of the current Congress. Johnson expressed confidence that these measures would advance a comprehensive “America First” agenda and address the concerns of voters nationwide.

Responding to Democratic warnings that the bill could cost Republicans their House majority in 2026, Johnson pushed back strongly, asserting that the legislation will directly improve the lives of Americans. “Everyone will have more take-home pay, they’ll have more jobs and opportunity,” he said. “The economy will be doing better, and we’ll be able to point to that as the obvious result of what we did.”

Major Tax Cuts and Economic Impact

Johnson emphasized that the bill permanently extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts, particularly benefiting lower- and middle-income Americans. He argued that previous tax cuts resulted in the lowest federal tax rates for the bottom 20% of earners in four decades, and said the new legislation further expands relief by cutting taxes on tips, overtime pay, and for seniors. “We’re giving everybody a tax cut,” Johnson declared, adding that the measures will support small businesses, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, and farmers.

Citing projections from the Council of Joint Economic Advisers, Johnson claimed the package would drive 3% economic growth, create 4 million jobs, and boost the average household’s take-home pay by $13,000. “This is a great thing for people who go to work every day,” he said, predicting a strong economy and voter optimism going into the 2026 midterm elections.

Johnson dismissed criticism from Democrats who argued the bill mainly benefits the wealthy and that some provisions for working families are set to expire. He responded that all workers earning between $30,000 and $80,000 per year would see a 15% reduction in federal tax rates, and insisted the cuts are permanent for all.

In addition to tax relief, Johnson highlighted provisions in the megabill aimed at strengthening border security, restoring American energy dominance, and increasing investment in the military industrial base. “We’re going to return to American energy dominance again, which is going to also be jet fuel to the economy,” he said, touting the bill’s broad impact on economic growth and national security.

As the Republican leadership prepares to advance its legislative agenda, Johnson projected optimism, describing the package as “the largest savings for taxpayers in U.S. history.” He concluded by saying that voters would see the tangible benefits in their everyday lives and that Republicans will campaign on these results in the next election cycle.
