Russia, US to Hold Embassy Talks Soon

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov announced on Friday that Russia and the United States are preparing to hold a new round of negotiations aimed at restoring the normal functioning of their respective embassies. Ryabkov emphasized that while no exact date has been determined yet, both sides recognize the importance of maintaining contact and moving forward with diplomatic engagement.

“Yes, it will happen. There are no dates yet. But there is an understanding that contact is necessary. This direction is basically working, there is progress, it needs to be built up,” Ryabkov stated during a press briefing.

The diplomatic talks are part of broader efforts to stabilize strained relations between Moscow and Washington. Embassy operations have faced significant hurdles in recent years due to political tensions, sanctions, and reciprocal measures that have limited staffing and services at diplomatic missions.

Ryabkov also indicated that while the primary focus is on restoring embassy functions, there could be scope for discussions on economic issues in the future. However, he clarified that such economic dialogue remains at a “probing” or exploratory stage for now, with no concrete agenda set.

The announcement reflects cautious optimism on both sides to reestablish channels of communication and address operational challenges that have affected consular and diplomatic activities. Observers note that while restoring embassies to full capacity is a technical step, it may pave the way for broader improvements in U.S.-Russia relations over time.
