Schumer Opposes Trump’s Budget Bill
Senate Democrats unite against GOP reconciliation bill advancing Trump agenda, calling it harmful to working families.
Schumer Mobilizes Coordinated Resistance to GOP Agenda
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is spearheading a Democratic effort to oppose President Donald Trump’s sweeping budget reconciliation bill, which consolidates major Republican priorities into a single legislative package. The legislation, labeled “One Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump, is being fast-tracked by Senate Republicans with the goal of final passage by July 4.
In a letter to Senate Democrats on Sunday, Schumer, D-N.Y., called the Republican proposal reckless and laid out a strategy to challenge the bill both in Congress and across the country. He is collaborating closely with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and senior House Democrats to share insights and expose internal GOP rifts.
“If this reckless reconciliation bill passes the Senate, it is very likely to contain changes, forcing it to be sent back to the House,” Schumer wrote. “That’s why we must be united with our House Democratic colleagues to fight this assault on working families.”
The Republican-controlled House initially proposed $1.5 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade. However, Senate Republicans—including Majority Leader John Thune—are pushing to deepen those cuts to $2 trillion or more. A faction of fiscal hawks is advocating for even steeper reductions.
Thune emphasized that Republicans’ top priority is to make Trump’s first-term tax cuts permanent. “We are not going to let [those cuts] expire,” he said. “Our biggest focus this month is completing this tax relief legislation with the goal of getting the final bill to the president before the Fourth of July.”
The bill, which spans key policy areas such as taxes, immigration, energy, defense, and national debt, will be reviewed by 10 Senate committees. Each committee is expected to draft amendments that align with Senate rules and individual member priorities.
Schumer warned that many provisions in the Republican plan violate reconciliation procedures and threaten democratic norms. He also criticized the bill’s proposed Medicaid cuts and efforts to prematurely phase out green energy tax credits introduced under the Biden administration.
Democrats Warn of Harmful Consequences
In addition to procedural strategies, Schumer urged Democrats to vocally denounce the bill in their home states and districts. “If the American people truly knew how deeply devastating, damaging, and deceitful this Republican plan is, they will reject it,” he stated.
Calling the proposal “One Ugly Bill,” Schumer portrayed the legislation as a direct attack on fundamental American values. “We know the first four months of Donald Trump’s presidency have been catastrophic for the American people,” he wrote. “It is our duty to fight for American families, to stop the damage, and make certain Republicans are held accountable.”
As Senate Republicans press forward with the reconciliation process, Democrats are preparing to spotlight contentious elements of the bill and force difficult votes, using procedural tools to slow momentum. The outcome of this legislative standoff could significantly shape the scope of Trump’s second-term agenda.
