Trump Demands Ceasefire, Warns Russia of Sanctions
President Donald Trump has called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to halt the ongoing conflict and reduce mounting casualties. In a social media post, Trump expressed optimism that both sides would comply, stating, "If the ceasefire is not respected, the US and its partners will impose further sanctions." He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with European allies to achieve lasting peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he had spoken with Trump about the initiative. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to implement the ceasefire immediately, awaiting Russia’s formal agreement. "President Trump confirmed that he wants this war to end, is ready to help, and supports the need for a ceasefire," Zelensky stated. Both leaders also welcomed Ukraine’s Parliament ratifying a key economic agreement with the US and reviewed battlefield developments.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz weighed in, urging the United States to intensify its pressure on Russia to secure a ceasefire as a first step toward a comprehensive peace process. Merz reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the potential for additional sanctions to compel Moscow’s cooperation. Merz also addressed broader EU-US relations, stressing that any trade discussions must involve the entire European Union and include talks on technological standards.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian forces of violating an ongoing ceasefire between May 8 and 11, claiming over 5,000 breaches, including artillery attacks, drone strikes, and rocket launches. The ministry asserted that its forces continued to observe the ceasefire despite these alleged violations.
As tensions rise, the US and its Western allies have reiterated their warning to Moscow: accept the 30-day ceasefire proposal or face further sanctions. High-level meetings in Kiev are expected to clarify the next steps in this escalating standoff.
