Trump Hails Ukraine Ceasefire Efforts

U.S. President Donald Trump praised a proposed 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, calling it a “potentially great day” for both nations. His remarks came amid renewed diplomatic momentum following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion for direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. Trump emphasized the human cost of continued conflict, stating, “Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never-ending 'bloodbath' hopefully comes to an end.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also responded to Russia’s signals with cautious optimism, describing them as the “first real signs” of Moscow’s willingness to end the war. However, he stressed that only a firm and verifiable ceasefire beginning on May 12 would demonstrate true intent. “There is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day,” Zelensky said.

The ceasefire proposal, backed by Western allies, would include a halt to all hostilities on land, sea, and air. While Moscow has yet to officially commit, Putin’s invitation to talks in Istanbul on May 15 signals potential progress. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called Putin’s offer a “very serious proposal” and said it reflected Russia’s willingness to negotiate “without preconditions.”

Peskov added that resolving the conflict “is more difficult than signing one paper,” emphasizing the complexities involved in achieving a sustainable peace. He reaffirmed that Putin is committed to pursuing a diplomatic path, though military operations would continue if no viable options remain.

Meanwhile, newly elected Pope Leo XIV issued a broader appeal for peace during a prayer from St. Peter’s Basilica. He urged a ceasefire not only in Ukraine but also in Gaza, calling on all parties to “release the hostages and come to the aid of a starving people that aspires to a future of peace.”

The convergence of diplomatic efforts and international pressure suggests growing urgency to end the three-year war in Ukraine. As negotiations take shape, global leaders continue to stress the need for immediate humanitarian relief and long-term stability in the region.
