Trump Silent on Biden Health Records

Trump Silent on Biden Health Records

Trump has not ordered declassification of Biden health records amid renewed scrutiny of alleged cover-up during presidency.

Leavitt: No Directive to Declassify Biden Health Files—Yet

President Donald Trump has not directed his administration to declassify documents related to former President Joe Biden’s health or alleged attempts to conceal his mental decline, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Thursday. The remarks came during a press briefing following the release of audio recordings of Biden’s 2023 interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur.

When asked by a reporter whether Trump had sought to review classified materials that could shed light on Biden’s fitness for office, Leavitt replied, “He has not directed anyone, to my knowledge, to look into that. But, surely, I can ask him if he intends to.”

The topic has regained national attention amid heightened scrutiny of Biden’s cognitive state. Audio released last week revealed Biden stumbling through responses, struggling to recall key personal events, and pausing frequently, notably forgetting the year his son Beau Biden died. The recordings were part of Hur’s investigation into Biden’s possession of classified documents from his tenure as vice president under Barack Obama.

Hur ultimately declined to recommend charges, characterizing Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” That assessment has fueled claims among critics that the previous administration misrepresented Biden’s fitness to govern.

The concern was further amplified after Biden’s office disclosed on Sunday that the former president has been battling an “aggressive” and metastatic form of prostate cancer. Meanwhile, several books published post-election allege that Biden’s staff were privately aware of his mental decline but continued to present him as capable throughout the 2024 campaign season.

Trump Camp Labels Alleged Concealment a ‘Political Scandal’

At the podium, Leavitt stated, “It was truly one of the worst political scandals this country has ever seen, that the previous administration covered up the decline in the former president's mental and physical ability. And it’s now all coming out.” She added, “The American people knew the truth, and that's one of the many reasons why President Trump won the election on Nov. 5.”

Leavitt also addressed Republican accusations that Biden’s staff used an autopen to sign official documents without his direct involvement. When asked whether there are safeguards or logs tracking autopen usage, she clarified that in Trump’s administration, “the president signs any document that has legal implications,” with rare exceptions such as letters to children. She contrasted this with reported practices in the Biden administration, saying, “That was not the case in the previous administration.”

The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project previously investigated the use of autopen signatures, claiming the same stylized signature appeared across numerous executive orders and documents—raising questions about authenticity and oversight.

Although Trump has yet to pursue formal declassification of Biden’s medical records or internal communications, the administration’s statements suggest further scrutiny may be on the horizon. For now, the White House is focusing on reinforcing transparency standards and holding the prior administration accountable for decisions it claims misled the public.
