Trump to Demand 5% Defense Spending at NATO

United States President Donald Trump is set to participate in the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in The Hague on June 24–25. The summit will serve as a platform for Trump to press member states to significantly boost their defense spending commitments.

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker confirmed the president's attendance, stating, “We're all planning on President Trump being there.” Whitaker emphasized the critical importance of increased defense budgets for ensuring collective security.

During the summit, the United States is expected to formally call on NATO countries to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to defense spending. This marks a substantial increase from the current 2% target, which has been a longstanding benchmark for alliance members.

Whitaker highlighted that “five percent is not just a number, it is a necessity for our security,” underscoring the administration's view that greater investment is essential to meet evolving global threats. The proposal reflects Trump’s continued focus on equitable burden-sharing within the alliance.

Trump last attended a NATO summit in 2018, where he similarly urged allies to fulfill their defense spending commitments. His forthcoming participation signals a renewed push to strengthen NATO's collective defense posture and address security challenges through enhanced financial contributions.

The summit in The Hague is anticipated to be a pivotal moment for transatlantic defense policy, as member nations grapple with shifting geopolitical dynamics and the need for robust military readiness.
