Trump Urges Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire
United States President Donald Trump has issued a strong call for Russia and Ukraine to bring their war to an end, describing it as a “stupid war” that results in the loss of 5,000 soldiers weekly. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump urged both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work toward peace, saying, “Get this war finished.”
Meanwhile, European leaders have stepped up efforts to enforce a 30-day ceasefire, set to begin on May 12. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the ceasefire must be “full and unconditional” and warned that the EU stands ready to impose further sanctions if Russia breaches the truce. French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the warning, stressing that Europe and the US are prepared for “massive and coordinated” sanctions if the ceasefire fails.
During a summit in Kiev, European leaders, including Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, held a phone call with Trump. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared that the conversation was “fruitful,” with Ukraine and its allies confirming their readiness for a full ceasefire across all fronts.
In a significant development, Zelensky reportedly expressed to Trump his willingness to engage in “direct” peace negotiations with Russia if Moscow accepts the ceasefire terms. Sources indicated that Trump welcomed Ukraine’s commitment and is awaiting Russia’s response.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia is considering the proposal but reiterated Moscow’s resistance to external pressure. He stated, “We are open to dialogue, but pressure will not work.” The world now watches closely as the potential for renewed peace talks hinges on Russia’s next move.
