Ukraine, US Seal Minerals Pact; Trump Eyes Peace Talks

Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, on Thursday ratified a minerals agreement signed with the United States on April 30, with 338 members voting in favor. The deal grants the US access to Ukrainian natural resources and establishes a "Reconstruction Investment Fund," which will be jointly managed by both nations. The fund aims to promote transparent and accountable investments in the extraction of minerals, oil, and gas, and in related infrastructure.

The Ukrainian parliament emphasized that the agreement is a crucial mechanism to encourage future-oriented development, supported by the US International Development Finance Corporation. Two additional agreements are expected soon to regulate the launch and operational framework of the fund.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump commented on broader geopolitical developments, signaling a deeper US involvement in efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Trump noted that stronger diplomatic engagement from Washington could help accelerate peace negotiations. “We are going to be more involved in the negotiations,” he stated, underscoring that his administration maintains robust relations with both Kiev and Moscow. Trump also mentioned the potential role of China as a mediator in future talks.

Turning to Iran, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to economic pressure but made clear that he does not support military escalation. “I don’t want to bomb Iran,” he said, signaling a continued focus on non-military avenues despite rising tensions in the region.

The dual announcements reflect the US’s expanding economic and diplomatic footprint in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, positioning Washington as a central player in both reconstruction efforts and conflict resolution.
