Trump Backs Syria Sanctions Lift, Talks with Israel

United States President Donald Trump met with Syrian Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Riyadh, marking the first high-level meeting between the two nations in 25 years. During the talks, Trump expressed his support for lifting US sanctions on Syria and urged Al-Sharaa to expel foreign terrorist groups operating within the country.

Al-Sharaa, in a previous conversation with US Congressman Marlin Stutzman in Damascus, indicated his openness to negotiating normalized relations with Israel. He also expressed interest in the Abraham Accords, though he emphasized that any official decision would depend on further negotiations. Stutzman viewed this as a positive development but highlighted that Syria's concrete actions would determine the sincerity of its intentions.

On the same day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated remotely in a high-level meeting with Trump, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Al-Sharaa. Erdogan praised Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Syria, calling it a 'historic step' that could encourage other nations to reevaluate punitive measures imposed during the Assad era.

Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s commitment to supporting Syria's stabilization efforts, particularly in combating terrorist organizations. He stated that Turkey is prepared to assist in managing and securing detention facilities housing extremist elements.

The meeting reflects a significant shift in US-Syria relations, potentially paving the way for broader regional normalization and cooperation on shared security concerns.
